Darker Than Love

My novels are published by Black Lace, an imprint in the vanguard of women’s erotica when it launched in 1993, and my short stories have appeared in dozens of anthologies and magazines in the UK and US. I primarily write about female sexual submission, with the emphasis on ‘forced’ rather than ‘service’ submission. So that’s rough stuff, ambiguous consent, humiliation and degradation; and not much in the way of formalised punishments and kinky protocol.

I’m fascinated by the psychological elements underpinning BDSM, and the tension between BDSM practice, femsub, feminism, and the irrational erotic compulsion towards something dark, disturbing, nasty, fucked up. Asking for Trouble, my most popular book, explores this terrain in depth and was written at a time when women’s erotica was much dirtier than is now acceptable in our post-FSoG era. Consider that your warning, should you need one!

For me, the imaginative space of fiction provides fertile ground for safely enjoying fantasies and longings that many of us shape and channel into BDSM play. In real life, we create structures that enable us to get our rocks off without causing harm to ourselves and each other. In fiction, however, that same level of caution and care isn’t required (and oh boy, does that make publishers nervous!) Or to put it another way, my characters often go down dark, dangerous alleyways (both literally and metaphorically), and you probably shouldn’t try this at home. But I assume my readers are smart people, perfectly able to distinguish fantasy from reality, and if you can’t separate the two, for Chrissake, stop reading books and get some help! Exploring the darker edges of desire means my work often borrows from other genres, in particular thrillers and the Gothic, and the stories don’t always end happily. (Consider that your second warning.)

I guess what I’m trying to say is if you’re looking for softcore romance, my books are probably not your bag (although my short stories are generally lighter than my novels). But if you enjoy tales featuring sexual obsession, high stakes, dodgy men and messy women, then you might just like what you find here.
